Hi, I'm Daniel Payne
I’m based in South Shields in the North East of England and I’m developing my horticulture career through practical garden work, allotment projects, vegetable growing, soil improvement and garden planning.
I take an organic-first, practical approach: build healthier soil, work with natural processes where possible and use the right tools to make garden jobs more efficient without losing sight of the plants, wildlife and soil underneath the work.
GrowSpace grew from the same idea — helping everyday gardeners understand their space, plan what fits and make better planting decisions for their own garden and local conditions.

Organic-first, soil-first and wildlife-aware
My starting point is to work with the garden naturally: improve the soil, support biodiversity, allow useful plants to regenerate where appropriate and use the least disruptive solution first.
Why I like the self-seeding approach to flowers
I prefer a managed self-seeding approach rather than treating every volunteer seedling as a weed. Where a flower is desirable and behaving well in the garden, I’m happy to let plants such as pansies and violas set seed, keep the strongest seedlings and thin or move them where needed. It can create a more natural-looking garden, give useful plants another generation without repeatedly buying replacements and provide continuity for pollinators. Unwanted, invasive or badly positioned seedlings are still removed so the garden stays intentional rather than unmanaged.
🌱 Organic-first What does organic-first mean? ⌄
For me, organic-first means starting with natural growing methods before reaching for synthetic chemical controls. That includes improving soil with compost and organic matter, mulching, rotating crops, choosing suitable plants, hand weeding and using physical barriers where practical. The aim is to build a healthier, more resilient garden rather than simply treating individual problems as they appear.
🐝 Pollinators Why are pollinators important? ⌄
Pollinators move pollen between flowers, allowing many plants to form fruit and seed. Bees, hoverflies, butterflies, moths and other insects all contribute. In a productive garden they can help crops such as strawberries, courgettes, beans and fruit trees set a better crop, while also supporting the wider garden food web.
🚫 Chemicals What are pesticides and herbicides? ⌄
Pesticides are products used to control pests; herbicides are products specifically used to control unwanted plants or weeds. Some can also affect beneficial insects, soil life or other non-target organisms if used unnecessarily or incorrectly. My preference is therefore to prevent problems first and use targeted, lower-impact methods wherever practical rather than routine spraying.
🎓 Qualifications I’m aiming for
I’m working towards recognised horticulture training to strengthen my practical skills, with a particular aim of progressing towards RHS Level 2 and developing my garden design knowledge further.
🏅 RHS What is the RHS? ⌄
RHS stands for the Royal Horticultural Society. It is one of the best-known horticultural organisations in the UK and its qualifications are widely recognised within gardening and horticulture. Working towards RHS Level 2 adds structured plant-science and horticultural knowledge alongside practical garden experience, helping build a stronger professional foundation.
💚 My approach
I like gardening to be practical, affordable and understandable. Not every garden needs to be perfect or expensive — it needs to work for the person using it.
My preference is to start with the least disruptive, most natural option: improve the soil, understand the cause of a problem, protect plants physically where possible and encourage a healthier garden ecosystem before reaching for chemical control.
I also like gardens to have a little natural freedom. With suitable flowering plants I prefer managed self-seeding — allowing useful flowers to reproduce naturally, keeping or thinning the seedlings that work and removing plants that are invasive, unwanted or in the wrong place.
I’m especially interested in gardens where vegetables, flowers, pollinators, composting and good soil management work together. That same thinking is behind GrowSpace — helping people plan clearly and grow with more confidence.
GrowSpace is still being developed and tested, and its guidance will continue to improve as real gardeners use it.

Using suitable organic green material, such as appropriate grass clippings or soft garden material, in controlled layers to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds and return organic matter to the soil. Material suitability is checked before use.
Compost areas
Setting up, repairing or improving compost bins and helping organise organic garden material for composting on site.
Garden layout help
Helping plan practical layouts for beds, paths, growing areas, tiers and garden structures before work begins.
Allotment help
Allotment tidy-ups, digging, bed preparation, compost areas, growing-bed layouts and seasonal crop planning.
Ground preparation
Digging, turning soil, root removal, rotavating suitable areas and preparing ground for future beds or planting.
Plant & flower planning
Helping choose suitable plants for the space, level of maintenance, season and local growing conditions.
